If I Can Make it There, I'll Make it Anywhere (Day 1)

A long long time ago Tiffany and I decided that we were going to go to New York City together, and then we realized that we were poor college students with no money, so that idea was put on the back burner. With post grad pay checks our dream was brought forward again, so we pulled the trigger and in March purchased tickets to New York.

Fast forward to October 18th 2017. We arrived at the airport, excited to go but somewhat dreading our red eye flight; however,I had purchased a neck pillow and taken a sleeping pill, so I was already more prepared than I had ever been for a red eye. I confidently walked toward the security check point, only to find out that I was missing a government issued form of identification. Panic started to set in. We had a little more than an hour before our flight left, so I called my roommate and she sped to the airport with my license. We waited anxiously, but Caroline made it to the airport in record time and we made it to our gate with 1 minute to spare. I hate to say this but, this is why you get to the airport early, kids.
Turns out, with or without a sleeping pill or neck pillow, sleeping on a plane is a lost cause. We arrived in New York at around 5am (2am for us in PST). We dropped by our hotel in Queens and took a short nap before heading out for the day. We headed straight to Times Square to try to score some cheap Broadway tickets.

We were unsuccessful, but we had the whole weekend ahead of us, so we didn't sweat it. Instead we headed of to make a dent into our, The Great NYC Food Tour 2017 list. We headed to Doughnut Plant.
The cashier threw in an extra doughnut for Tiffany, so we got to try three flavors for the price of two. Not a bad start to our trip.
I went for the carrot cake doughnut. It didn't disappoint.

And Joe's pizza was in the area, so we tried that as well. It was good, but nothing special.

After walking the Highline, we headed to Chelsea Market, which is full of fun shops and, you guessed it, food.
We weren't hungry, but we heard we had to try Los Tacos No. 1, so we shared one taco. I wish we would have been more hungry because it's definitely a 10/10 recommend.Seriously, one of the best things we ate, and we ate a lot.
We headed to Washington Square Park, and rested there for a while. There were Jazz musicians playing and it felt nice to sit and relax in the shade.
The main reason we went in October was because we had heard so many wonderful things about New York in the fall. However, we were thwarted in our attempt to experience fall this year as it was still very warm.
We found an artist doing free portraits, so we got ours done. We also ran into the sister missionaries, and once we started talking we realized that one of them was from my home stake. The Mormon world is a small one. The artist was amazed that we randomly ran into people we knew, so I tried to explain that we actually didn't know them, but it was like we did.

We also ran into our friend Hannah! She happened to be in New York as well, and we met up with her before her flight back to Utah. We tried DO. A cookie dough place, which is essentially an ice cream parlor, but instead of scoops of ice cream they sell scoops of edible cookie dough.

We visited the Strand book store before heading back to midtown to met up with Aubrey.

Aubrey flew in from Utah to spend the extended weekend with us in New York. We met up near the NYC public library, which we unfortunately couldn't enter because Aubrey had her luggage.

We walked around Grand Central Station.

Navigating the streets, stores, and subway with this luggage wasn't a fun experience.

All the kinds of M&M's you could ever want to try at the 3 story M&M store, and for double the price.

We eventually made it to the Upper West Side to eat dinner with our friend from BYU, Christian-who now lives there. We walked to our restaurant, and after about ten minutes of walking we realized it was actually not close to his apartment at all, but Christian "needed his steps" so walk we did. We ate at an Italian restaurant, which was cash only. Why do people do this?

We ended the night with dessert from Milk Bar.
There is only so much time for trying food you know? So when the chance is there you have to take it. We tried the ice cream and the birthday cake balls.

Then it was off to the hotel. We stayed at a Marriott which was about a 45 minute subway ride from Times Square. We got such a good deal on our room though, so the long ride didn't bother us, especially considering that every morning and night the hotel would shuttle us to and from the subway station. With day one behind us, we were already looking forward to the food we would be eating the next day...and everything else of course.
