A Weekend in San Diego

I present a 4 day weekend guide to San Diego. Or should I say SUN Diego, because it was H.O.T. 

When going on a trip, one must first consider who they are going with. A good trip is really determined by who your companions are. Going with 16 ward members is a good idea. 

Of course you have to figure out your housing accommodations. I suggest knowing someone from San Diego so you can stay at their house. However this might mean you end up sleeping 2 to a bed, 4 to a room, 8 to a bathroom, and in a basement with no AC during one of the most unusually hot and humid weekends of all time. It will all be worth it though when your hostess makes you hearty healthy breakfasts every morning, Sunday dinner and dessert, and is genuinely one of the most pleasant people around. 

ITINERARY 

Day 1: Go to Imperial Beach in the morning, which must be directly followed by IB Tacos for lunch. 

San Diego is known for its Mexican food, and this taco place is one of the best places around. Trust me, we went to three taco places in 24 hours. 

Then head over to Coronado. Since the island is small, rent bikes and ride around the whole island.  

Make a pit stop and walk around Hotel del Coronado.

It's fun to look at their overpriced ice cream that you wont be buying. 

 Continue your bike ride. and proceed to shop for your future beach house. There are an abundant amount of beautiful picturesque beach homes.

Create a biker gang and frustrate every driver and create traffic all around town. 

End your ride at Nado Geloato. You've earned it. Sample everything. It's all amazing.

Dinner would usually be next on the agenda, however you just ate gelato. So while you wait to get hungry, play the community piano. Even if it means playing the only song you have memorized, which just might happen to be a The Christmas Song.

Then go get more Mexican food at the Luchador themed restaurant. Even as someone who dislikes sea food, I might suggest you voluntarily try your first ever steak and shrimp burrito. 

Day 2: Spend the day at Mission Beach. Go in the water-it isn't too cold and feels good after you have been in the blistering heat. However your friend Tiffany will swear she saw a shark fin and immediately book it out of the water. This will discourage you from going in again. Seeing dolphin fins 10 minutes later will make you question Tiffany. 

Get more Tacos. You're in San Diego after all. At this point it's about time to move on to the next activity. Or like us, you can stay at Mission Beach for two hours too long, then drive somewhere else to go cliff jumping. If you're lucky you will witness a somewhat lackluster proposal on a nearby cliff.  

You might be wanting to call it a day and go home, but don't.

Go to Balboa Park 

 It's full of beautiful things

and some random things. 

Then go home and play group games till midnight. Try not to get turned off by how competitive and mean some of your travel companions can get while playing games.

Day 3. Sunday. 

Go to the La Jolla singles ward and be grateful for the Stanford singles ward. 

Sunday presents a perfect time to visit the Temple grounds. 

 

Then hit up old town San Diego and try some homemade tortillas from the tortilla lady, because you can't go too long without having some sort of Mexican food. 

You might need to find excuses to enter as many shops as possible to escape the heat. Helpful hint: at the candy shop you can watch them make taffy and then try the free samples. 

You can also get the street vendors excited by making them think that four girls are actually going to buy some hats. Then just take a picture with them on and put them back. 

End your time in old town San Diego by going to the Mormon Battalion historic site. If it is busy they make you wait in a room where you watch Meet the Mormons clips. You can actually get quite drawn in to the stories and disappointed when they call for your group before the clip ends. I still need to find out how the Mormon Japanese family band is doing.

 The exhibit is quite interactive and you might start to believe that you are actually a pioneer. 

After dinner back at the house, end your Sunday with a nice Sunday walk to a hill where you can look out into the valley of San Diego and maybe even see Mexico if it is a clear day. 

Day 4: 

Go to La Jolla beach. Some of your group may want to snorkel and kayak into the caves, but you might want to look around and then beat the traffic and get home. Choice is yours.
